The company says its arthritis drug, a arthritis drug developed and approved by the Food and Drug Administration, has the potential to become the first of its kind in the United States. It's the first over-the-counter medication approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, and is intended for patients with a joint disorder.
"Celebrex has the potential to be the first nonprescription arthritis drug in the United States," said Mike L. Green, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive officer. "It is a relatively new treatment for people with arthritis, and it's already been approved for over-the-counter use."
In fact, the drug was approved only last year in the United States, Green added.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer, whose drug, Celebrex, is currently marketed under the brand name Celebrex, said the company's decision not to market Celebrex in the United States reflects Pfizer's decision to change its marketing plans after the first of its few drugs was approved in the United States, which has a higher risk of side effects.
"Pfizer is committed to making Celebrex accessible to millions of people worldwide," said Dr. David Seidel, a Pfizer chairman and chief executive officer. "We are committed to delivering that benefit to millions of our customers."
Celebrex has been one of Pfizer's most well-known and expensive drugs. Since the introduction of its first-ever prescription drug in 2002, the drug has been widely prescribed for pain, arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Pfizer's Celebrex has also been marketed for treating a range of other conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
The Celebrex brand, also known as Celebrex XR, is marketed under the brand name Arthritis Remedies. It is approved for the treatment of arthritis in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older.
The Celebrex brand is available only in tablet form and is available in 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg capsules.

It's a new trend: the most popular drug in the U. S. will be available over-the-counter (OTC) only.
OTC prescription drug coverage is expected to be $0.84 per prescription, up from $0.76 in 2009, according to the National Community Health Plan, a nonprofit health plan in Washington.
The drug is not widely known to be safe and effective, but consumers can expect to save up to $1,000 for OTC medications like Celebrex and Plavix (celecoxib), the most widely used.
The drug, which also includes Vioxx, is used to reduce pain and inflammation, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, among other conditions.
The price of the drug, which includes OTC medications like Lipitor (atorvastatin), Nexium (esomeprazole), and Prevnar (ritonitor), is expected to be as low as $2,400 per prescription, according to the health plan. It's also available over-the-counter.
